Nanxiong County was established in Tang Dynasty (in 684A.D.), Nanxiongfu established in Ming Dynasty (in 1368), and Nanxiong Prefecture established in Qing Dynasty (in 1807). Nanxiong is a famous historical and cultural city in Guangdong Province and famous for its "five ancients": Meiguan ancient road, Zhuji ancient alley, Shanying ancient pagoda, ancient fossils of dinosaurs, and ginkgo ancient trees. The famous Zhuji ancient alley was an important place for people from Central Plains in the Huanghe River migrating to the South in Song and Yuan Dynasties, and descendants of Zhuji alley people are now across Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong and Macao areas, and overseas.

The traditional Chinese medicine in Nanxiong has a long history, there have been famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners since Yuan and Ming Dynasties. In late Qing Dynasty, there were 9 traditional Chinese medicine stores in Xiongzhou City, there were finely produced traditional Chinese medicine pellets, ointments, pills, and powders available. Nanxiong was influenced by Central Plains' culture earlier than other areas of Guangdong Province, and Tea-Picking Opera was introduced in the years of Qianlong of Qing Dynasty and is still popular nowadays. Fire Lion Dance, Dragon Lantern Dance, Candle Fire Dragon Dance, and Festive Lanterns display in Lantern Festival are still very popular and show no signs of subsiding.
