Natural Environment

  Location & Population
    Heyuan situates in the NorthEast part of Guangdong Province, middle-up stream of the Dongjiang River, at 114 degrees 13 seconds-115 degrees 35 seconds east longitude and 23 degrees 10 seconds-24 degrees 50 seconds north latitude, coverng a land area of 15,800 square kilometers. It's bordered by the municipalities of Huizhou and Shanwei in the south Meizhou to the east, Shaoguan to the west and Ganzhou Jiangxi province to the north. It lies at the juncture of the coastal areas of GD province and inland cities of China.

    Heyuan is mainly composed of mountains and hills, among which mountains, hilly terrain, gorges and plains accounting for 53 percent, 36 percent and 11 percent respectively. Luofu mountain chain runs across the city sideways from northeast to southwest. Jiulian mouton chains stretch to the Baiyun Mouton in Guangzhou from the Heping, Lianpng country along the southwest trend: Huangliu stone, 1340 metros, the highest peak of Heyuan, is located in the Lanping country.

  Climate
    Heyuan appertains to the subtropical monsoon climate zone and the Tropic of Cancer passes across the south part of the city. The annual average temperature is 20 degree Celsius-21 degree Celsius; Average temperature is 12.3 degree Celsius in January and 28.4 degree Celsius in July. The temperature differs from 2 degree Celsius to 3 degree Celsius between the north and the south; Annual average rainfall is 1,930mm; the average relative humidity is 77%; the annual average sunshine time is 2051.1 hours; frost-free period covers as long as 333-345 days. The city hardly suffers from the fierce floods and other disasters.




Administrative Division



    Heyuan city was established with the approval of the state council in 1988. The city exercises jurisdiction over one district and five countries including Yuancheng, Dongyuan, Longchuan, Zijin, Heping and Lianping.




Resourses Environment

  Land resources
    Total land area of the whole city is 15.8 thousand square km, that is 23.7 million mu, including 20.48 million mu of mountain area; 1.65 million mu of cultivated land; 964 thousand mu of water area.
  b. Forest Reserves
    Heyuan city is endowed with abundant forest resources and is one of the important forestry bases of GD province. The current forest land covers 1.215 million hectare; the standing stock volume is 28.645 million cubic meters; the annual growth volume of woods is 1.52 million cubic meters; the annual consumption volume of woods is 0.608 million cubic meters; the forest-coverage rate is 71.7%, possessing; favorable Natural Protection conditions and environments for water resources. Besides of common varieties such as pine trees. China firs, camphor trees and Chinese sweet gum, etc, there are also rare kinds of trees like nanmu, cypress trees, etc. Daye Mountain, the nature preservation zone of rare animals with an area of over 20 thousand mu, was established XinFengJiang State Forest Park with approval of the state council in 1993.
  Mineral Resources
    Heyuan city is rich of mineral resources. There are more than 40 kinds of ores have been discovered, mainly including iron, tungsten, tin, copper, lead and zinc, uranium, fluorite, kaolin, limestone, granite, diabase, pottery clay, rare earth, mineral spring and hot spring, etc. There are also 180 mineral points have been found, among which, the reserves of iron, tungsten, tin, fluorite and rare earth etc rank first in GD province. Iron ore reserve is 0.259 billion tons, amount to 40% of the ensoured reserves of the whole province. The reserves of other kinds of ores were 220 thousand tons of tungsten ore. 300 thousand tons of tin ore 1:05 million tons of lead and zinc ore, 170 thousand tons of copper ore, so thousand tons of rare earth, 3 million tons of ilmenite, 6.05 million tons of fluorite and 23 thousand tons of silica. The large mineral deposits include DaDing iron ore of GD, JuBankeng tungsten and tin metal ore in Lianping, Dajianshan Lead and zinc ore in Lianping, Heping rare earth ore, Xiantang fluorite ore in Dongyuan, Baishizhang silica ore in yuan cheng and Linjiang ilmenite in Zijin.

    Longchuan minral water is one kind of valuable high-quality mineral spring containing several kinds of trace elements meet the need of human body. The volume, temperature and quality of the water are dynamic stable and it tastes very good. Organic germanium beverage series manufactured by Dongyuan Country Xinfu Gernanium Development Co. was won the gold medal in '93 Hongkong International Food Fair.

  Waterpower Resources
    The whole city's waterpower resource totally contains 1270 thousand kw and 987 thousand of it is exploitable resource. There is 591.8 thousand kw of waterpower resource has been exploited by the end of 1996, including 442.5 thousand kw of installed capacity of both hydropower stations XinFengJiang and FengShuBa, 149.3 thousand kw of installed capacity of local small hydropower stations as well. The whole city's electric energy production reaches 182.thousand kwh. in 1996. There is still 400 thousand kw of waterpower resource awaiting exploitation of the whole city. Furthermore both pure water resource and high-quality potable water resource's exploitation value and exploitation potentiality are very huge.
  Tourist resources
    Heyuan city has rich natural and human landscape, which forms the distinctive features of East River tourist resources. There are XinFengJiang Reservoir, the biggest artificial lake of the South China the turtle peak tower built in the year of the Shaoxing Reign in the Nan Song Dynasty, the fossils of dinosaur's eggs and their unearthed sites, Gaopugang hot spring tourism and entertainment center in the urban district; Fo Moutain scenery, FengshuBa Reservoir, Meizikeng Sanatorium, Toucheng the famous historical and cultural city in Longchuan country; the landscapes of Beitou Limestone cave, gurong waterfall, etc in Lianping country; the ancestral, home of Mr. Sun Zhongshan the site of Chinese soviet Areas, Jiuhe Convalescent hot spring and Guzhu's yuewang shone. Taoist nun cliff in ZiJin country; the sacred place-immortal Litian Cliff and Wuzhi Mountain tunnel in Heping country.
  Special products
    There are varieties of special local products in Heyuan, mainly including Chinese yangtao, the king of fruit, Xiangu mushroom growing in LiuLian Moutain, the king of vegetable dishes, Heyuan garlic, the top-grade condiment, XinFeng River Mandarin fish, the ginseng in the water, Longchuan mineral water, the Orient sacred water. Besides of these, Other special local products like Lithci, Longan of Pugian town in yuancheng district and Guzhu town, Linjiang town in Zijin country, Chinese chestnut, green tea of Dongyuan country, summer sleeping mat of woven split bamboo, dried beef of Heping country, dried persimmon of Longchuan country, chick chilli sauce, iron pot of zijin country, potted landscape of Lianping country, etc, all enjoy great prestige both at home and abroad.
  Manpower Resources
    The total populations in the whole city reached 3114960 by the end of 1998. Of this total, 1463.5 thousand personnel were social laborers. There were 36453 technicians of science and technology of various kinds in 1998. Among then, 7432 persons obtained middle or high title.




Infrastructures

  Transportation £º
      Highways

      The National highway No.205, 105 traverse the whole city from the south to the north. The Heyuan-Meizhou expressway in plan and the Heyuan-Huizhou expressway under construction run across the city proper which is 198 km from Guangzhou and 200 km from Hongkong. It takes only three hours to get to the destination.

      Railways

      The Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway join up in Longchuan country and pass through the city proper. It takes less than 3 hours proper to reach Guangzhou or Shenzhen by express tran.

      River navigation

      The whole city gets a total in land navigation mileage near 700 km. The port Heyuan and Port Guzhu are the main ports of Heyuan city and can reach right Dongguan, Guangzhou. The annual cargo handling capacity reaches 2 million tons.

  Post and Telecommunication
    The city has telephone exchange boards with a total handling capacity of 252.9 thousand lines at the end of 1998. The telephone subscribers totaled 243 thousand, 8.73 phone sets for per 100 persons in urban and rural areas. The mobile telephone subscribers reach 24.323 thousand and pager users amount to 68.794 thousand.
  Supply Facilities of Tap Water
    The city's network of water supply pipelines covers 28 square km. The users for water supply service total 0.22 million. Daily supply capacity of tap water reaches 113 thousand cubic meters.
  Electricity Service
    There are one 220 kv transformer station, thirteen 110 kv transformer stations and twenty-three 35 kv transformer stations in Heyuan. Hydropower Station XinFengJiang and Hydropower Station FengShuBa are the two large-scale projects in GD province located in city urban and Longchuan country respectively. The power supply is abundant and ensures the highly reliable electricity service.




Industries' status quo

    The whole city's gross domestic product (GDP) was 7.761 billion yuan in 1998 of this total the value-added of the primary industry was 3.433 billion yuan; the value-added of the secondary industry was 1.942 billion yuan; and the value-added of the tertiary industry was 2.386 billion yuan. The proportion of three industries was 44.2:25:30.8.
  The primary Industry
    Heyuan's agriculture preliminarily shaped in the three-high (high output, high quality and high efficiency) development pattern, taking the high quality fruit and aquatic production as the dominant factor. A series of planting bases for high-quality fruit, tea, Chinese chestnuts, Vegetable medicine, mao bamboo, oil-tea camellia timber forest and livestock & aquatic bases for eels, three-yellow chickens and learn-meat-type pigs, etc have been built. The whole city's gross output value of agriculture in 1998 was 5.322 billion yuan, 8.6% higher than that of previous year.
  The Secondary Industry
    Taking advantage of its abundant resources of minerals, water power and farm & sideline products, Heyuan has built the product structure with resources development as its back-bone industry. Heyuan's pillar industries consist of minerals smelting industry, building, materials industry, hydraulic power generation, food industry, textile and other light industries and electronics industry.
  The Tertiary Industry
    Taking advantage of its splendid ecological resources and geographical position of a railway hub of communication, Heyuan has been actively developing the ecological tourism, warehousing business and the commerce & trade.




Foreign Economic Relations

    The whole city's total volume of exports in 1998 reached 139.95 million US dollars, up 5% over the previous year; the total value of import amounted to 64.86 million us dollars, up 33%. Foreign capital actually utilized amounted to 75.52 million us dollars, an increase of 6.5% over the previous year.

    The gross industrial output value in 1998 reached 4.267 billion yuan with an increase of 18.9% than that of previous year.





Science, Education, Culture and Public Health

    There were 1773 schools of various kinds in 1998, including 2 secondary normal schools, 6 secondary technical schools and one specialized secondary school with 26253 full-time teachers and 635692 enrolled students. Every year students educated from colleges and secondary specialized school amount to over 2.2 thousand.

    Cultural and art undertakings made sound development. There were 6 specialized art-performing troupes in various forms, 7 mass art centers and cultural centers, 6 public libraries at and above country level 5 museums and 6 broad casting stations, 3 television stations and 6 cable television stations. There were 175 health care institutions and 114 rural township hospitals. Heyuan was chosen as one of the cleaning cities of GD province and was recommended as one of the state cleaning cities.
