Brief Introduction to 2002 Business Fair for Guangdong-
Hong Kong Economic, Technology and Trade Cooperation
Guangdong
Province is the largest province in South China. It
has a land area of 178,000 square kilometers and the
population is 86.42 million. Beside the South China
sea and being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, Guangdong
has convenient transportation. It is one of the most
vigorous province in China. In 2001 the GDP of Guangdong
reached RMB 1,055.65 billion, increased by 9.5% over
the previous year, accounting for over one tenth of
the national total.
Guangdong took the lead in reform and opening to the
outside world. Approved by the Central Government, Guangdong
has set up 3 special economic zones, 4 economic and
technological development zones, 6 new and hi-tech development
zones, 6 free trade zones and 2 export processing zones.
Another 57 development zones have been approved to set
up by the provincial government. An all-dimensional,
multi-level and wide-range opening pattern has been
formed in Guangdong. At present Guangdong has established
trade relations with almost 190 countries and regions
in the world. In 2001 its total import and export trade
value reached USD 176.49 billion, increased by 3.8%
over the previous year, among which the export value
was USD 95.42 billion, increased by 3.8%, taking 35.9%
of China's total and ranking first in China for the
16 consecutive year. By the end of 2001 over 100 countries
and regions had made their investments in Guangdong,
setting up nearly 90,000 foreign-invested enterprises
and more than 30,000 processing industries. The accumulated
actual use of foreign capital had been USD 141 billion.
Foreign investments have covered most industries of
the national economy, and most investors have got sound
returns. Guangdong has become an ideal place for foreign
investors.
While implementing wide economic and trade cooperation
with the rest of the world, Guangdong also strives to
further create a fine investment environment, provide
rapid, efficient and proper service for the foreign
business people, and protect the legal rights of them.
Guangdong has become one of the provinces in China with
the most vigorous market economy, most developed foreign
trade and economic cooperation, most complete investment
environment, strongest scientific and technological
power, regulated government operation with high efficiency,
fine labor quality and biggest market potentials. It
has become an ideal place for world investors and a
good trading partner.
With China's accession of WTO, Guangdong will further
implement its strategy of export leading, grasp the
opportunities and face the challengers. We will further
strengthen the economic and trade cooperation between
Guangdong and Hong Kong, complement each other's advantages,
sharpen the international competitiveness edge and strive
to create the mutual prosperity of both Guangdong and
Hong Kong.
